I have a 2000 Hyundai Elantra that has about 35,000 miles on it. I’ve never really done any preventative maintenance on the car, mostly out of ignorance of what exactly I should have done.
I am starting to use the car more for commuting, and would like to invest some money into it to keep it running safely and smoothly for a few more years. What are some good services I can ask for when I go to the mechanic, and which services are generally bogus?

just the usual checks, brake pads and disks, oil and lubes and fluids, belts and chains, spark plugs, lights and fuses.. a general checkup these are the main things you should look at and change if needed, if any thing else if broken, it should be under warranty

- EXHAUST PIPE AND MUFFLER
- SUSPENSION MOUNTING BOLTS
- STEERING GEAR BOX, LINKAGE AND BOOTS/LOWER ARM BALL JOINT
- POWER STEERING PUMP, BELT AND HOSES
- DRIVESHAFTS AND BOOTS
- AIR CONDITIONING REFRIGERANT
the first things that come to mind are the tires which could be weather checking and the timing belt. the belt should last 100k but its also 7 years old now so that is becoming a concern. by 35k the brakes may need some checking. cooling system may need new fluid\flushing. ****** fluid needs to be checked if its an auto. otherwise a look at all fluid levels, belts, hoses, CV boots, struts, and underbody rust. perhaps a hook up to a computer scanner. a good shop should be able to check it out in a couple of hours since most of it is nothing more that an eyeball scan.
Every service that is recommended by the Manufacturer is explained in your owners manual. Dealers or auto repair places will try to sell you more..but buy what is needed.. These places will also give recomendations on needed repairs after inspecting your vehicle..usually a free inspection is given out if asked. Like a “27-point inspection”
