tj asked:

My son flipped his car onto it’s roof yesterday. Luckily he was not injured. The car is dented but looks like it would still be driveable if it would start up. It was upside down for a little over an hour before we were able to get it turned back on the wheels and tow it home. The engine will not start. What needs to be done to repair an engine after a car has been on it’s roof?

Probably, you need to push a button on a device that cuts off the fuel pump in a crash. This device is called an inertial switch or maybe emergency fuel cutoff switch.

I can’t tell you where it is, for obvious reasons.

Check the oil. I doubt there is any left in it.

I agree, fuel cut off if it has one on the year car in question,
but if the engine will not even crank over it may have ran for
a while in the upside down position and is probable toast due
to lack of oil pressure.

id reccomend draining the oil if any left and replacing .check the spark plugs as a precaussion and look for a fuel cut off switch which will be shown in the owners manual.

I probably didn’t hurt anything.I rebuild wrecks and see this quite often.
While upside down the oil drains into the top of the engine where it doesn’t belong.Let it sit for a day then pull out the spark plugs.Crank it over for a few moments to clear it out. Then install new spark plugs.
The transmission should be alright, check the fluid. The battery may have drained through the vent.Hose down the area to flush away any acid.

There are many strong possibilities cause the engine won’t start.

1. If the car is using carburetor system then the possibility is not enough fuel inside the carburetor that cause the engine won’t start or the engine runs lean… then you need to add some fuel inside the carburetor yourself

2. If too much fuel inside the carburetor ( it floods or overflow).. it also will cause the engine won’t start .. then you need to drain some of the fuel from the carburetor

3. if the car is using fuel injection system… it is not a problem because ECU will control the mixing rate between air and fuel. Unless the fuel injection system or ECU is damaged due to strong impact… If this happening then you have to send the car to workshop

4. The water was penetrated into your ignition system. Check your ignition system especially the spark plug and the ignition coil (distributor). Clean it and dry them up

ps: I love reading this car articles to get some knowledge and information about car at

I had similar problems with my Nissan Pathfinder and last month. Get a free auto warranty quote ans see if you can get the policy before you need to get your car repaired.
