I had a mechanic tell me that 2000-2002 3-series BMWs have engine problems (there supposedly was some recall), but MSN Autos says only the 2003 has had problems (occasional ignition coil failures). Does that mean only 2004+ models are worth buying?

2002 to 2005 are the same car, but they just changed little things on the engine and slapped a new sticker on the window. I would say to find a 2004-05 with low miles or even a 06 demo. Trust me, you dont want to haveto pay to fix something on these cars cause its $$$$.

I have a 2003 BMW 3-series cabrio, and it runs smoothly. Ignition coil failures?? I’ve never had any problems with it, don’t worry about that.
I am an original owner of a 2001 e46 330ci with 68k miles. Knock on wood, I haven’t had any engine problems what so ever, or even received anything about recalled parts from BMW or any of their dealers.

It wasn’t a recall. Just a Technical Service Bulletin.
BMW doesn’t have major problems with the engines (trim and electronics, yes).
I’d get a 3.0L engine if you can. 2.8 wasn’t that special or that much better than the newer 2.5L. The 3.0 is a sweet engine though.

I personally love the old 4 cylinder M3’s, But generally any In-line 6 cylinders are made strong and is very reliable.
Those who have problems with their 3-series or any In-line 6’s are people who don’t take good care of their cars. And should not be driving any cars at all.

your mechanic friend may have been referring to the M3 3-series. The early M3 (2001-2003?) motors had bearing issues and required major recall work. The late 2003-2004/5? 3-series had faulty ignition coils, but they were also recalled. All of the above issues have recalls, which means you can get them fixed at no cost to you at the dealer. Most owners would have gotten a recall letter and had the work done already.
In general, the straight six motors (M52TU, M54) between 1999-2005 are very reliable and won many engines of the year awards, along with it’s M counter part, the S54 motor.
All BMW’s have their share of issues, but the 3-series between 2001-2005 are among the most reliable. However, if you are buying a used car, I recommend a pre-purchase inspection and a review of any maintenance records you can find.

The E36 models were/are highly praised even after the E46’s came out. Many of the comments had to do with how well balanced the cars are. I prefer more power so a 328 (if you can get those in the US) or an M3 would be my choice.
