Antoni asked:

I stupidly answered a question in photography section so please educate me.

If a nikon cam says F.. this means the lens and body arent communicating?

like say an old 50mm MF lens on a D200 will cause the issue?

i have never used nikons on auto so i assume it doesnt happen on manual setting? - also cant recall using a MF lens on a AF body either so give me the low down please.

Thanks for answering.
many thanks Dr

Yes, Antoni. F means that a non-CPU (old) lens is attached. The lens will still work, but it works the way it did in the 60’s. You set the aperture by turning the aperture ring and read the setting directly off the lens housing.

This is from the D200 manual: If you choose to specify the maximum aperture in the Non-CPU Lens Data section of the menu system, the selected aperture WILL display in the viewfinder. Otherwise, it does not. If you set the camera up this way, it will work in M or A modes, with the aperture still being controlled by the aperture ring. The meter WILL work if you set it up correctly. There are tables showing which lenses do what, so I can’t be more specific than that here.

My wife’s D50 manual does NOT show this option, but says that the camera must be used in M mode only. In fact, my D70s manual says that the meter will not work in ANY mode. How ’bout that!

I had my auto replaced by a manual 6-speed. The gear after 5th actually says F—, I think for Fast?

Help me Antoni!!!! Will my Nikon get better mileage now?
