For most automatic vehicles, the manufacturers suggest that the transmission fluid be checked every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. However, unless there is a noticeable issue, such as trouble shifting, most drivers forget all about maintaining their automatic transmission fluid. What eventually happens, is that by the time that a mechanic performs your regular maintenance tune-up, the repairs that you need are serious and expensive.

In part 4 of our “how to” series for monthly automotive maintenance, we are going to learn an easy to do, and easy to remember method of keeping our transmission fluid topped off, thereby keeping our engine running smoothly.

Checking the automatic transmission fluid

Tips to know before you start

1.    Your owner’s manual will tell you which type of automatic transmission fluid you should be using. The two common types are Type F, and Dexron, also known as Mercron. Some carmakers, require specially designed, unique automatic transmission fluid for new models.

2.    Automatic transmission fluid does not get used up, if your fluid level is low, then you need to find the leak.

3.    When adding automatic transmission fluid, be very cautious, that the fluid does not accidentally come into contact with the exhaust manifold. If it does, it could cause a quick and furious engine fire.

The steps to take

1.    Always check your operator’s manual before you perform this maintenance check on a vehicle for the first time. Some makes of car need to have the engine running for this, and some do not. You could end up in serious trouble if you use the wrong procedure.

2.    Make sure the car is parked on a level part of the road or driveway.

3.    Leave the engine running, in park or in neutral, and give the engine a chance to warm up thoroughly. Unless your owner’s manual states otherwise.

4.    The reservoir for automatic transmission fluid is actually in the transmission, located near the back of the engine.

5.    The dipstick for the automatic transmission fluid looks very similar to the dipstick for engine oil, once you locate it, pull it completely out, wipe it off, replace it, and now pull it completely back out again.

6.    On the dipstick, you will see two distinct level markings, one for a warm level reading, and one for a cold level reading.

7.    If the fluid level does not reach the full line for the warm reading, then you need to add transmission fluid.

8.    Be very careful not to over fill, adding too much causes the fluid to foam, and it could splash you, causing minor to sever irritation, or even burns to your skin or eyes.

The automatic transmission fluid is a translucent, reddish color when it is in good, clean condition. If the fluid in your transmission is a dark, murky red, or a blackish hue, then you will most likely need to have the transmission fluid flushed. This is a maintenance measure, best done by someone who has done it before.

There are several avenues in which you can buy a car. One of the places you can purchase a vehicle is through a car auction. Even with car auctions you have a couple of different places to choose from depending on where you live. For instance if you live in a smaller town you probably have one or two places to choose from for private car auctions. If you live in a larger city not only will you have the private car auctions but you will also have the police auctions. We will discuss both types of auctions in this article as well as some of the things to be wary of.

First police auctions are usually going to contain older police cars they are retiring as well as cars they may have seized in raids and other police activity where they confiscated the items. This means you could find some really nice cars and a great discount or not find much. Usually the police auctions are held when there are a lot of items to put up for sale. You should also realize that they are not solely car auctions, often time boats and other types of motored vehicles are going to be on the list for sale. The police auctions are also going to offer less in the way of prices in most cases. Since they seized the items all they are really looking for is more income to put back into the department spending budget. This means you can find a car that is within your price range fairly easily. The downside is they don’t always have the type of car you might be interested in.

For a specific model vehicle you would have more luck trying the private auctions. Private auctions are when a company has cars on the lot from an owner that is looking to sell their car quickly and easily. For most of us this is a last resort for selling a vehicle to try and get what we believe is a worthy price. The owner therefore sets the price of the vehicle and if the bids never reach that number to car will remain unsold. The owner does have the option of selling for under their price, but that is a phone call before it could be released. At car auctions they are going to start the biding a little lower than the actual price of the vehicle to get the sale started.

Now that you know about the two different auctions let’s look at a few things you should know. First at a car buying auction you are not going to be able to test drive the car. You can ask to look at the engine, to hear the engine run, but you can’t actually go off the lot with the car. This means you are looking over the car, but not fully testing it and you could wind up with something that has a lot of mechanical issues if you are not careful. Most often the car auction will have a mechanic on hand to test drive the vehicle as well as look it over before the auction starts.

Tonneau covers (like GM Tonneau Cover) are made of leather, vinyl or other soft flexible materials used for protecting the interior of a convertible when the soft top is down. Tonneau covers are also used in pickup trucks to protect the luggage or other stuff placed at the truck’s bed from dirt particles and other foreign objects.

To prolong the usage and function of tonneau covers, you should check it regularly for wear outs, looseness, and other debris caught on the cover. Check mounting hardware regularly to insure that all bolts or clamps are tight. Lit is also recommended that you lubricate the locks regularly with a quality Teflon or silicone spray by using a can with an insertable plastic tube. Best of all, check the manufacturer of the tonneau cover for specific maintenance and cleaning guides since there are several tonneau cover designs and types.

When cleaning your tonneau cover, make sure to clean your vehicle and cover in shaded place like under a tree or in an open garage. Start by washing your lid with cool, clean water and a mild soap. Make sure to first flood the lid with water to remove surface grit that will scratch the finish when wiped. Next, using a hose, rinse the cover well making sure to remove all traces of soap and wipe off excess water using a sponge. Be careful to hose down the entire car to prevent soap from streaking your car’s paint finish. Do not use chemicals like detergents, dish washing liquids, bleaches, harsh cleansers, strong cleaners, dry-cleaning solvents, or any other strong chemicals as a cleanser. These chemicals can have harmful substances on its mixture that could damage your tonneau covers. Moreover, avoid using hot water when cleaning the cover.

If you have a vinyl tonneau cover, apply some quality vinyl cleaner that you can find in the nearest auto shop. Using a white all-cotton towel, wash the entire tonneau cover with the cleaner. Make sure to follow the instructions found on your chosen cleaner to help you out in your work and to avoid damaging your tonneau covers. Wash the entire tonneau cover and never spot clean to avoid rings or bright spots on your tonneau covers. Make sure that you will only use soft cotton cloth or sponge as a cleaning tool. Do not use rough abrasive cleaning pads because it can scratch the vinyl creating pores that allows dirt and other unwanted particles to stick.

Repeat the cleaning process if you feel that you haven’t done enough and the tonneau cover is still dirty.

Many people have the wrong idea about salvaged cars. They are viewed as being junk. While salvaged cars don’t have the best reputation, understanding how they got that way may turn your thoughts around.

Cars that have been given a salvage titles are those that the insurance company claims would cost more to repair than the car is worth. However, it’s mainly based on the estimated value of the vehicle so for example if you own an older truck that was in mint condition before that deer jumped in front of you and caved in your front end, the insurance company may figure the truck is not worth it to repair. Having been in this situation myself I can assure you it was definitely worth it to me to repair my truck!

So, what can happen is often times the car will be issued a salvage title instead of a regular one. This type of title is meant to protect buyers so that they know the vehicles history and are aware of any potential problems. If this happens it can be well worth it to keep the car even if it gets a “totaled” report. Many times the car can be rebuilt depending on the original damage.

Many people love to fix up cars as a hobby or business. If you’re looking to get into rebuilding cars, salvage cars are an excellent way to get started. You can often repair the car or take the parts to build a new car.

If you don’t own a salvage car then another option is to buy one at auction. Salvage auctions are a fun place to buy because they give you access to great cars at often very cheap prices. These auctions provide a function that helps the buyer, seller, and even the environment! If you’ve never considered buying a salvage car to rebuild or even use as parts then you’re missing out on a great thing. You can buy a wrecked but repairable car or truck, usually saving thousands over a non-salvaged car at an online auction. There are many great vehicles out there just waiting for you to fix them. Whether you use the vehicle for its’ parts or to repair it and make it drivable again, a salvage car can be a great investment.

No matter if you’re buying for yourself or to resell the car, there’s a huge potential to save a lot of money and make money too. Keep in mind, there are some vehicles that are no longer worth anything, but there are others that are worth their weight in gold. If you rebuild the car to exact specifications then you can expect the car to pass the inspection with flying colors.

There are many individuals who specialize in rebuilding salvaged cars as a hobby or to resell the vehicle to make money. Before buying a salvage title vehicle, whether it be a car or truck, either to keep for yourself or to sell it, it’s vital that you check with your local DMV to find out what the requirements are for putting a salvage auto back on the road. Every state has different laws so it’s important to know what your state requires before making an investment.

Buying a car from a salvage auction is a great way to save money and even make money if that’s what you’d like to do. You’ll also be doing a great thing by reusing resources that are already there. Many people lose out because they are scared to invest in a car with a salvaged title. Their loss is your gain as you come out with a restored vehicle that will last you many years at a great price.

I personally own a salvage title car and it’s been running great for the near 7 years I’ve owned it. I saved about $5,000 compared to other cars of the same make, year and model. Another added benefit is my yearly DMV registration fees are about one quarter the cost of a non-salvage vehicle!

My mechanic always gives me a sticker reminding me to bring my car in for maintenance after 3 months or 3000 miles. I do not drive much so after 3 months I am still 1500 miles under the suggested mileage for maintenance. Should I bring my car in every 3 months regardless of the mileage, or should I schedule my visits solely on the mileage?
